Snow squalls on a sunny day

Today is the last mild day before a big snowstorm is set to sweep over a massive portion of the United States, including Vermont. We are projected to get anywhere between 4” – 24” of snow from Sunday to Monday.

It was sunny and 30 degrees, a perfect day for walking. The winter sun shines in a life giving way that is not unlike summer, but feels like more of a lifeline. Like you’re holding on to a raft on the open sea. Because my skin is mostly covered, it is my face that soaks it all in.

On my walk earlier to Otter Creek, I heard a White-breasted nuthatch singing loudly, and often. I wondered what he or she was proclaiming. A new discovery, a joyous call for the sun and warmth, or something else to come? We may never know. But today, that little nuthatch had something to share with the world.

There were blustery snow squalls today, which contrasted the mild winter atmosphere quite starkly. Out of nowhere, horizontal snow starts blowing rapidly. There is an element of excitement and a tremendous level of awe to snow squalls. I’ll never get tired of them. These happened during the waxing crescent, and just before a big winter storm.
