December’s Full Moon

Happy December Full Moon — The Long Nights Moon / Moon Before Yule / Snow Squall Moon

Tonight is the full moon, commonly called the Cold Moon, but according to my witches calendar, it is the Long Nights Moon. Upon even more research, ancient pagans may have called it the Moon Before Yule.

It seems many cultures had several interpretations of the names for full moons based on what was happening in nature at the time. If I were renaming it based on natural observations, I’d call it the Snow Squall Moon.

Snow squalls have dusted the landscape with fresh snow all day, creating a thick layer of clouds and making the visibility low. But luckily, I am a full moon hunter, and despite New England’s thick layer of clouds in the winter, the moon made an appearance for a brief time. Almost like magic.
